Characters: James, Catherine, Original Characters Tags: Violence, Gore, Angst Summary: Follow James on his journey from Vault 101 to Vault 112, which becomes eerily similar to the plot of the 2011 film The Grey (also starring Liam Neeson.)
Chapter 1
Sometimes when James closed his eyes he could still see Catherine as she was that bright July morning, laying on a cold steel desk. She took his hand in hers, dark eyes almost sparkling in the half lights of the Jefferson Memorial, her grip as strong as it had ever been. Her hair stuck to her face, stray curls slick with sweat... the little details of her face permanently etched into his mind because after that day he would never see her again... not really.
Her lips were chapped from the Wasteland as he leaned down to catch the words she whispered to him. "Don't be afraid."
----
The doctor snapped awake, sweat sticking to the sheets of his bed, empty without the presence of the woman he once loved so much... still loves. She was immortalized in the form of their child, a constant reminder of his failure to save a world too foolish or impatient to save itself. He rose, pulled on his boots with a mechanical precision even in the darkened room, and stepped into the main room. As he grabbed his lab coat he paused to get one last peek at his heir, the only trace of his that will remain in Vault 101 soon.
He and Jonas had agonized over it... the decision not to tell, but neither of them know how the Overseer may react to their plan, so they kept it secret. He knew there would be ramifications, but if he could spare even one innocent it will be enough, so he pulled on his lab coat and shut the door. He paused to touch the frame around the quote in the living room, Revelation 21:6, one last reminder for his child of the importance of charity... of sacrifice.
Then he left the room, heading down the hall at an even gait, ready to meet Jonas and end the farce that was his life underground. He was ready to get back to the surface and do his part to help save the world from itself. He was ready to finally do right by his wife... by the ghost that haunted him.
