James's body falls near-limp against the window of the purifier. "Run," his lips say. Her fists pound against the glass until there's a crack and a blast of hot, irradiated air scorches her cheek. He grabs her by the arm and tears her away, manages to drag her into the escape hatch and she’s silent the rest of the way. When they get to the Citadel she does not ask any more questions. She merely takes Charon away and they walk. “Why did we leave?” He finally gets the courage to ask when they’re halfway out of D.C. She looks at him for a moment.
“I give up.”
They are camping outside of Springvale when he hears pills rustling in the bag and slowly spilt out. His eyes open for just a second and suddenly he lunges to her wrists and shakes a handful of Med-X out of the rough hands and lets her thrash under him until she’s finished with her loud, out-of-tune screeching and lays there, looking beyond him, at the stars.
He kicks the pills into the dirt before he lets her up.
“Why did you stop me? You’re supposed to let me do what I want. I want death.” Her gaze pierces him and he struggles to find the signals.
“i love you” he says the word out loud, lets her read his lips. The eight letters feel weighted and awkward on his tongue and she just stares.
Pinkie raised, middle and side finger down, index and thumb up.
She stares at him and is silent. Her fingers are clenched tightly into fists and he eventually glances down and away. “sorry” he murmurs.
She gets closer to him and leans against his chest. Every muscle in his body goes stiff but she is just feeling the gentle vibration of his heart against her ear. Thump. Thump. Her arms slowly wrap around his and she holds him close and tight, and he feels tears on his skin, body-wracking sobs, and heavy breathing.
She cries as her lips press against his mouth, and the tears keep going even as her eyes plead “please please please I need someone now please don’t go please I’m sorry please please” He holds her tight and listens to her breathing slow and watches her eyes shut until she is asleep. But he is awake, he is her protector, and he always will be.
And he will run right beside her when she races him to Vault 87. And he will join with Fawkes to rescue her from Raven Rock. And he will take bullets from Enclave soldiers as they walk behind Liberty Prime. And he will scream when she activates the purifier and collapses. And he will pace and glance at her while she sleeps until she wakes up.
