When they discovered that Arcade would be joining them, Rex and Boone had virtually the same reaction. They both gave a low growl then promptly resumed gnawing on beef jerky and ignoring everyone else. At least, Rex had the excuse of being a dog, whereas Boone’s only defense was that he was uncomfortable around people who were smarter than him – in other words, anyone in the Mojave who wasn’t a feral ghoul.
Vulpes eyed Arcade with undisguised contempt. After a little time on the road, his facade of civility had crumbled like month-old crackers.
“I see we’re taking in cravens now, as well as mental defectives. I wonder how many more useless fools we can accumulate between here and the Strip? It’s not as if they’re in short supply.”
Arcade blinked dazedly. “What a friendly bunch you have here. Maybe I’m better off with the cacti.”
He started high-tailing it in the direction of Old Mormon Fort, but Six grabbed his arm and hauled him back.
“Oh, no, you don’t. We’re going to see Mr. House and you’re going to be brave, got it? Or I’ll sic my dog on you.”
“I see. Intimidation. A valid, if somewhat hypocritical, tactic,” Arcade murmured, rubbing his wrist where she’d gripped it. He bruised easily.
“I’d suggest crucifixion myself,” Vulpes muttered. “Less chance of him running away.”
Arcade raised an eyebrow, his forehead crinkling. “Crucifixion? Last time I checked, we weren’t in Arizona.”
Six glared at Vulpes, annoyed at the dangerous game he was playing. He met her look with his usual snide arrogance, as if daring her to call him out.
“He doesn’t know what he’s talking about,” she said.
“Yes, do reassure the craven,” Vulpes replied. “I’d hate for him to lose even a wink of sleep over such paranoid delusions.”
“Shut your piehole, Vulpes!” Six retorted. “I’ve half a mind to -”
She didn’t realize her slip until Arcade bolted back in horror, his laser pistol outstretched before him.
“Vulpes?! As in ‘Vulpes Inculta’, the guy who massacred the entire town of Nipton? Vulpes Inculta of the Legion? Um, excuse me, for jumping to conclusions, but if you’re that guy I’m going to have shoot at you and then run away, okay?”
Boone instantly perked up, a strip of beef jerky still hanging from his mouth.“LEGION? WHERE?”
