It’s been years since he’s seen the sun. And he didn’t think he was that type of person anymore, but some quiet part of his brain stirs at the feeling of the weak, irradiated sunlight against his skin. He responds without thinking, a coyote scenting prey, a flower turning its face to the sun.

And if Sydney notices the tension as it leaves his frame, notices the tiny sigh, she doesn’t say anything. It’s what he likes about her. She never hesitates to speak her mind, but she doesn’t feel the need to fill the air with empty words. She’s one of the few humans he knows who’s comfortable simply being.

He hasn’t been out of the Underworld or away from his dark corner in the 9th circle in the dozen years since Ahzrukhal bought his contract. But some things are so deeply remembered that they cannot be touched, and the feel of the outdoors is one of them.

He closes his eyes, and enjoys the remembering.
