Moon Rise - Ch 8/8
(Anonymous) 2013-02-09 04:04 am (UTC)(link)The baby was born. They did the gene projection and there was no doubt in James' mind that he was going to have quite a bit of trouble come puberty because of the crowds that would gather outside their home. Catherine had agreed, laughing so sweetly over their child's bright future. He had been just about to start really planning their future when her voice broke through the haze of paternal pride, altering him to something... off...
"James?" she murmured, even though he was standing right beside her.
"Catherine?" he gasped.
"James?" There was a rising urgency to her tone as the heart monitor's beep became irregular.
"Catherine!" he exclaimed. "She's in cardiac arrest! I'll start compressions!" He paused to spare a glance to Dr. Madison Li as she stood there, eyes wide with shock as the woman he loved lay on her desk, potentially dying. "Get the baby out of here! Move! Move!"
He had done what he could, but the equipment was outdated and inferior to what they had used back west. She was bleeding out and her heart just couldn't take it. He was crying before she died in his arms. One last message from her lips to keep his spirits up, through her pain and growing weakness. "Don't be afraid."
----
James woke up a second too late. The Alpha was there, alone yet again, one massive paw between him and the rifle he had scavenged from Wilhelm's Wharf. It looked down at him with its almost human eyes and he felt it hold itself back, waiting for him to stand. The beast looked at him briefly before he understood its intentions... This was the end... the moment where only one of them would walk away.
"Okay," he nodded, thinking of the pistol in his pocket. "Okay."
The animal growled acceptance.
James thought of his wife, lost before she could ever hold their child. He thought of that very child, growing up in the cold depths of the Vault without him to depend on anymore... Of Moriarty and his little schemes. Of Grandma Sparkle who had given him a place to rest and food to replenish his spirits. Of Three Dog and his good fight that happened behind closed doors and across the Wasteland. Of Hoff the drug dealer/doctor and his caravan that helped him cross the open ground. Of Madison who had turned her back on him and their once essential mission. Of Talget and his daughter who would never see each other again in that life... And last, but not least, or James Diaz, the former Slaver who found peace overlooking an empty valley in a ruined world.
All of them were standing with him as he looked down at the big dog, watching him with its teeth bared and its almost human eyes. The doctor let go of his pistol and nodded. "I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end," he murmured, summoning up his strength as he closed his eyes and clenched his fist. "I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life..."
The beast snarled and he met it as it charged. Then all the rest was violence, pain, and inevitable darkness as he found himself floating in the void, one word echoing around him in her voice. "... freely."
"Hello Catherine," he murmured.
"James," she whispered.
"I think I've lost my faith," he told her.
"Don't be afraid," she insisted, and for just a second he felt her hand ghost over his cheek. "A part of me is always with you."
When he woke up the moon was high above and every part of his body ached, but he was alive. If he was alive then he had a job to do, so he took one last look back toward the river and the hills that had marked his journey. He pumped a stimpak into his aching limbs and drank a bottle of water that had lingered too long in his pack, forcing him to spit out some of the stale water. Then he dusted himself off and kept going because that was all he had left.
