An oldie (in kinkmeme years) but a definite goodie. Stomach-clenching angst and should-I-shouldn't-I guilty conflict from sentence one right 'til the end, with a delicious meaty filling of white-hot porn. I didn't know whether to fap or cry, and that's just the way I like it. I will keep recommending this fic until my fingers rot off. And then I will type with my nose or other handy protrusions.

And just when you didn't think it could get any better, BAM. There's a sequel. If you haven't read this series yet, stop screwing yourself out of an excellent read and get to it! ;)

The collar came as a surprise. One of many.

That line from the beginning of the fill pretty much says it all. A sociopathic courier locks a slave collar around Veronica's neck and our favorite scribe has to find a way out of her horrible predicament while keeping her sanity intact--and not only through her escape, but also through her eventual revenge and the unlikely ally she's enlisted to help her do it.

It's definitely one of the most gut-churning, intense and dark stories on the meme, but it's well-worth reading. Veronica's characterization as she struggles through all of the truly appalling and downright cruel shit she's been forced into is so spot on and heartbreaking that it's a little painful at times. Dobie, the courier herself, is repugnantly fascinating in her own right despite all of her horrible deeds, and it's truly a testament to the author's skill that such a despicable, manipulative person comes across as not only just that, but also as a well-developed, multifaceted character with believable (and--gasp--even sympathetic!) motivations. The glimpses we're allowed into her fucked-up mind in the latest updates, into how an educated sociopath truly views the world and everybody in it, are in a bizarre, chilling and very well-put together class of their own.

So, yeah, I highly recommend this fill. It's well-written. It's well-plotted. And it bleeds effort everywhere because the author has definitely put in the time and the research.

Go read it and find out for yourself! And while you're at it, send a little love the author's way for crafting such an epic and awesome fill for the meme! ♥ u authornon~

There are also hysterically funny bits, including the line "'I'm Arcade Gannon. I'm...' Secretly terrified of teenagers. '...Responsible for your welfare.'"

Why it rules more than a Tunnel Snake: Basically the nakama fic on the meme. The A!A is extremely talented, and the amount of foreshadowing that you can pick up on a second time through is absolutely ridiculous (in a good way, natch). The Courier was given a lot of care to - his back story, once you discover it, is gripping and is definitely unexpected. He's different than the other Couriers I've read about; something about him makes him unique, compelling, and easy to sympathize with. He's very well-written.

Boone's back story is expanded upon, and, while the story is mainly about Arcade and the Courier, he drives the plot until the climax. The final scene also revolves around him, and it'll have you in chills if you understand its meaning. (You'll have to read Vincit's accompanying fic Cry Havoc, but it will spoil Vincit like crazy if you haven't read up to a certain part. In order to fully understand the ending, read Vincit up to and including part 17, then read Cry Havoc up to and including part 9, then complete Vincit. A little confusing, yes, but so worth it.)

This is a must-read, and that's all I can really say. It's completed and will be continued in Cry Havoc.

...So yeah. I'm technically recommending a series. Hopefully that's allowed.

It's also superbly written, brutally violent without being kitschy or twee about it, and is probably the only story featuring Vulpes where he isn't some kind of camp, mustache-twirling autistic super villian. Lex Talonis is, imnsho, criminally under read and deserves way more comment love than it gets. I don't rec often but when I do, I mean it.

For those with a rape fetish, the sex is brutal but strangely erotic; for those who are there for the hurt/comfort, the aftermath is equally moving; for those just in need of a good story, it's that too, and reminds us how scary Legion society is up close. Probably my favorite fill on the meme, which is saying a lot.

Besides Caesar, this woman is the only person Lanius actually respects due to her acclaimed brutality (he doesn't really give a fuck about the Legionaries, so it doesn't phase him that she butchered Nelson and Cottonwood Cove. In fact, he's a little impressed). Guess who he picks as his new wife? Besides, keeping her alive is a greater punishment than killing her.

I want Lanius going motherfucking apeshit anytime a Legionary so much as looks at the Courier the wrong way. Did that Legion recruit just call Lanius' wife a deceptive Profligate whore? Huh, looks like that recruit is suddenly missing a tongue... and a few limbs.

Bonus if the Courier is just as much of a cruel, merciless brute as Lanius. Nobody wants to be near her since she has a terrible habit of slaughtering anybody who irritates her.

I cannot convey deeply enough the sexy power-play that goes between Lanius and his new wife, the thinking in Lanius' head, everything. It's so awesome, I can't believe it. You just have to read it. Why it rules more than a Tunnel Snake: This story twists and turns and leaves you begging for more. You want the courier to be with Vuples, but you also feel a great deal of pity for Boone (who obviously loves her a great deal). I also really liked the part where Vuples is trying to make peace with his orders to kill the Courier.

Of course this can lead nowhere, as this faction divide is far worse than any Romeo and Juliet shit. The only thing they could ever agree upon is that both have a dark secret, and that this dark secret is the other.

The best part has to be the setting; the a!a has taken the basis of a simulation Charon would have been in and created something that really does feel like a simulation, in that it is cold and generated and frustrating and simple yet maze-like, all at once and in the very best of ways.
