Ensemble - New Vegas High [3b/?]
Date: 2011-10-31 09:07 pm (UTC)Arcade wasn't entirely sure a class president could even do that. But clearly, neither was Fox, or any of the other football players. Fox exhaled sharply through his nose and casually adjusted his sunglasses. "Come on," he commanded the other Legionaires. "This degenerate isn't worth our time."
The King jerked his head once the football players had gone and his minions dispersed, returning to their poster-hanging tasks. "Thanks," Arcade breathed.
The King looked over him and reached out to smooth the collar of his shirt. "Hope they didn't rough you up too bad?"
"I'm fine," Arcade said quickly, shoving away the little flip his stomach gave. "I mean, I could have taken them. Wait, you can tell by looking at me that that's a blatant lie. Thank you for saving me from another beating."
"Another beating?" the King said, a little wrinkle appearing between his eyebrows. "Those boys been giving you trouble before now?"
Arcade shrugged airily, tugging open his locker door with minor effort (given how he had been slammed into it) and pulling out his books for next class. "My third altercation this week with some assemblage of jocks," he said. "I have the uncanny talent of never knowing when to shut my mouth. Still," he closed his locker and looked at the King, "thanks. That was the first time anyone's called 'em off before they got a good hit in."
The King's expression was a mingle of concern and confusion. "I've seen you around, though, I know you've got friends. Aren't you one of Benny's crew?"
Arcade chuckled. "Ouch, I think he might punch you for saying that. No, I don't have a-- a crew. I mean, I doubt the Mathletes count. Believe it or not most 'crews' around here are well above meeting their nerd quota so no one's exactly trying to scoop me up."
"Huh," the King said, giving him an appraising look that brought about another stomach flip that Arcade fervently ignored. "So no one's lookin' out for you." He paused. "Sounds like somethin' that oughtta change."
The bell rang, effectively making Arcade jump. The King held out a hand and said, "See you around..."
"Arcade," he provided, shaking his hand.
"Arcade," the King repeated. "I'll, uh... I'll catch you later."
"And just for the record," Arcade called against his better judgement as the King was walking away, heart catching in his throat when the King stopped and looked at him over his shoulder. Arcade tilted his head towards one of the freshly-hung campaign posters. "Benny can deal. You just totally won my vote."
The King laughed, and Arcade would be fixated on the memory of the warmth in his eyes for the rest of the day.
