Ensemble - New Vegas High [5/?]

Boone has just closed his locker when he was struck by a slap on the back of his head. He whipped around and scowled at Manny. "You got three seconds to tell me what that was about."

Manny just glared at him incredulously, then held up a rumpled poster. "Mind telling me when you decided to run for prom king?" he demanded.

Boone blinked. "Wait, what?" he said, snatching the poster and studying it.

"I think it's a pretty straightforward question, Craig," Manny said, crossing his arms as Boone looked at the poster, feeling more and more confused. "I thought we agreed we weren't even going to stupid prom. We gotta focus on spring regionals -- the Red Rock High Khans are enough of a threat to our title without you wasting energy thinking about renting a tux and dancing with girls and being prom king."

"This ain't mine," Boone said, crumpling the poster in his hands. "I swear. It's probably someone's idea of a prank." As the words left his mouth, Boone remembered overhearing snippets of a conversation he was trying to ignore between Benny and Roger the other day, Benny laying out some scheme about stacking the competition with write-in candidates to divide the vote for certain 'types'. There was bound to be a football player on the ballot -- this was probably Benny's jacked-up idea, pitting a cross country guy against some punk Legionnaire. Man, Coach Dhatri was not gonna be happy about this.

"Oh, sure, someone just took the time for the prank of running your campaign. Hilarious." Manny narrowed his eyes. "Wait. Is this about Carla? Is this about her running for prom queen?"

Boone's heart reflexively jumped into his throat and his fists balled tighter in the crinkling wad of ex-poster. "No."

Manny looked seriously disappointed. "I thought we agreed, you don't need that snooty little princess."

"I know," Boone said far too quickly.

"She was nothing but a distraction," Manny continued, never one to miss out on the chance to dump on Boone's ex. "And she was always in your face about how much time you spent training."

"I know."

"And she was always a jerk to the rest of us. She didn't get how important your teammates are in cross country."

"I know."

"And she's going with Fox anyway."

"What." Something sharp flared in Boone's chest.

Manny shrugged. "Well, yeah. Fox is running for prom king, they're running on a couple's campaign."

"What?" Boone made a strangled sound of barely contained rage. "They've been going steady for two weeks!"

"Well, yeah," Manny rolled his eyes, "how long had you two been dating when she let you 'pin' her?"

Any other time and Boone would have gotten dangerously close to smacking his teammate good for that one. But this was different. Something bigger was taking place and his shoulders were quaking and he resolutely unfolded the heavily wrinkled poster in his hands. "Oh, screw that, I am running for prom king."

You have so no idea how incredibly cooool and wonderfully fun to read this story is. An here I only know US high schools from badly dubbed tv-series in 1980s Germany. Keep it up, your AU characterizations are amazing. 'The Red Rock High Khans'. I don't even.

So, the oddest thing just popped into my head:

It's a bit of conversation from the movie "The Rock," where Mr. Badass, Sean Connery asks Mr. Helpless Scientist Dude, (Nicholas Cage) "Are you ready for this?"

"I'll do my best."

"Your best? Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and fuck the prom queen."

(Voice gets all gravelly.) "Carla was the prom queen."

"Yeah?"

(Dramatic "lock & load" camera shot.) "Yeah."

It's not even RELEVANT, really, but it just popped into my head for some reason. (Laughs.)
