Before You Go 2b/3

“The Mojave.”

She found even Deb was giving her a shocked look now. “I’m going to link up with a caravan to get out there,” she continued. “Just like you keep telling me to do on long trips.”

“And when you get there?” Tony pressed.

“There’s got to be courier work out there,” Layla answered. “Nice, easy mail delivery. Nothing dangerous.”

The ranger was giving her a stony look. “Layla, the last time you left NCR lands, you nearly got caught up in the destruction at the Divide.”

That stopped the argument that had been forming before it began.

“Did they ever find out what happened there?” she asked quietly. All she’d heard was that the community and everyone in it had been destroyed.

“It’s classified,” Tony said firmly. “All you need to know is it’s dangerous beyond our borders.”

Layla sighed. “I’m still going. There’s too many couriers here. It’s oversaturated. I figured I’d go where there’s more demand than supply.” She bit her lip. “That, and I could use some time away from here…”

“This isn’t about that one guy…” Deb started. “What was his name? Larry?”

“You’re not still seeing that idiot, are you?” Tony all but growled. Layla held her hands up placatingly.

“No! No, not for months… but I am looking forward to putting some distance between myself and Lugnut.”

“You were dating a guy named Lugnut? Deb asked, amazed. “What did this one do?”

“He made a few suggestions in our dating routine I wasn’t pleased with,” Layla said with a grimace, “There was talk about sharing me with his friends.”

“And where does he live?” Tony asked, pulling a pencil from his pocket.

“Oh no you don’t,” Layla said as she glared at her brother. “You’re not going to do like you did to Wilhelm.”

“It’s not my fault the guy had a warrant out,” the ranger said as he started jotting down notes into that damned little notepad. “And we’ll talk about the Mojave.”

“Now you sound like Dad.”

“He’d lock you in the basement if he heard what you were planning.”

Layla sighed at that.

After dinner was cleaned up, Layla moved outside to sit on the porch and watch the sunset. Tony had a nice little set up. Layla hoped he wouldn’t get reassigned elsewhere and have to give up the place.

“Hey.”

Layla looked over to find her brother walking through the door. “About going to the Mojave…” he continued.

“Tony,” she started, trying to sound firm, “I’m going. I know you don’t want me to-”

“I know, I know.” The ranger held up his hands as he took the empty chair. “I’m not going to try and argue this. I’m going to help you out.”

“Oh?” Layla hadn’t been expecting that. “How?”

“I’ve lined up a job for you.” He handed her a card. “Head over to the base before you head out with Blue Skies. You‘ll want to talk to Lieutenant Jamison”

“What’s the job?” the girl asked, looking at the card.

“Hanging posters,” Tony said. Layla gave him an incredulous look and he continued. “Propaganda. Brass wants us winning hearts and minds in the Mojave. Propaganda’s one of the more direct ways to establish our presence and boost morale in troops.”

Layla nodded. “So how does it work?”

“They’ll have a contract for you at the base,” Tony said. “Not sure on all the details, but don’t you let them talk you into NCR money.”

Now the girl was giving him a confused look. “Should I ask that they pay me in irradiated gold?”

“No, caps only. NCR money’s practically worthless out there.”

Nodding again, Layla grinned. “Got it…. Well thanks, Tony. I wasn’t expecting you to actually help me on this.”

“I know how you get when you get a dumbass idea in your head,” the ranger grumbled. “I’ve got something for you too.”

“What is it?”

Her brother pulled a gun from his holster and handed it to her.

“No more of that rusted 9mm that’s just waiting to backfire on you. But you’d better be damned sure you take care of this.”

Layla looked down at the gun she’d been handed. It was the old 10mm her brothers used to fight over. She looked it over.

“What happened to the laser sight?”

“It broke, but it can still take extended mags.” He gave her a look of strained patience. “I know you can shot straight, but try to remember to aim when you do.”

“Yeah yeah,” Layla waved him off. “Thank you.” He nodded and sat back on his chair.

“There are things out there you’re going to have to be careful about. Have you heard about the Legion?”

“I heard they were at the Divide,” she answered, holstering her ‘new’ gun. “And they’re who we’re fighting in the Mojave. Some kind of crazy tribal group, right?”

“Layla.” He sounded serious as he continued, more serious than she’d ever remembered hearing him. “The Legion isn’t like a pack of raiders or the Khans. They can't be bargained with. They can't be reasoned with. They show no pity, or remorse, or fear. And they absolutely will not stop, ever, until either we stop them or they take us down.”

The girl bit her lip, and her brother continued.

“If Legion soldiers find you, you run. And keep running until you're somewhere safe. The Outpost, one of the ranger stations, McCarran or Golf, doesn't matter. Just don't talk to them, don't try to fight. Run.”

She nodded, still biting her lip. Tony nodded, then grew quiet again they sat in silence watching the sun set.

“And could you please not date the first idiot junkie you com across?” the ranger said as the sky started getting dark.

“I’ll at least wait until the third or fourth,” Layla answered.

I'm so happy to see this particular Courier has made it over to the kmeme! Loved the history here. And the brother-sister banter was just adorable.
