a floor and a ceiling and windowless walls [2/2]
Date: 2012-02-09 11:42 am (UTC)It was his contract.
The old woman started smiling. "I know how this works. How you operate," she told him. "So give me the paper."
Charon handed it to her, helped her sit up so she could look at it, and watched as she silently read it. Although it was mainly for show; there wasn't much to it, and she'd read it numerous times before. In the past, she had tried to get rid of it, had threatened to burn it, had purposefully tried to get Charon to break his contract. It never worked.
Charon had certainly done things of his own volition before. However, these were things not covered in his contract. Like fetching Cram or feeding it to the Wanderer. The contract was pretty straight-forward, and mainly applied to combat situations. But Charon seemed to obey most of her commands- verbal or otherwise- regardless. Some days, it seemed like he didn't mind. Other days, he was complacent. This had made the relationship between employer and employee very strained and uneven.
For example, the Wanderer had wanted Charon to help her kill so many people. Many of those people had appeared good, had appeared innocent. On those days, Charon was especially grumpy.
Other days, Charon and the young woman camped under the stars, or listened to the radio, or did nothing but stay in bed all day. At those times, she would whisper loving things in his ear and he would listen to them.
But those days were a thing of the past.
The old woman ripped the faded contract in half. Then she ripped it in half again and again. She threw the pieces into the air and laid down in her bed. She grabbed Charon's hand and waited. She heard the familiar sound of that ancient shotgun. And then, she felt nothing.
The Lone Wanderer opened her eyes. Charon was staring at her, gun in hand, finger on the trigger. She nodded at him, but he didn't pull. This made her angry and frustrated and in no way relieved her pain.
"Charon," she said. "You're fired. You have to do it."
The ghoul stared and thought about it and stared and lowered his gun. The old woman looked confused, looked hurt and angry. She opened her mouth, started to explain. Charon put his gun away and she started to yell. But he wasn't listening.
"I will do as you command," he said. Then Charon kissed her on the lips, for old time's sake, and walked out of the room. He walked out of the house, walked away from the small yard, and kept going. He didn't stop.

Date: 2013-01-29 11:30 am (UTC)Yeah, I'm a big fan of the Charon/LW pairing but you have to admit it is a very interesting situation. That is, the fact that their companionship revolves around a piece of paper that he feels obliged to obey for some reason. I certainly don't ever see them in a "normal" relationship.
Anyway, thanks for reading!
