summary: Cass suffers from alcohol withdrawal.
She lost control of her own body, drowning in sweat, vomit, and shivers. The floor bruised her feet. The mattress bruised her body. A tenderness she had never known. Arcade watched her mind disassemble into chunks of memories and stories and glimpses of sounds.
She was a child again, clinging to her mother and reaching for the apple pie. Arcade placated her mushed words but offered her broc flower instead to chew on. Cass gnawed on the plant, mind circulating the small ranch house she grew up in. Four windows. One, two, three, four. Yellow walls. Old tractor parts rusting against the back wall. Grass taller than she.
Time traveled too quickly now. She spun in a dust devil, trembling hands on a hot dirty floor. Heavy hair stuck to her neck and face. Arcade brought a cool wet towel to her mouth, cleaning up thick globs of bile and snot.
She was turning into something sweet and docile, a transformation no one could have expected. Cass was still going through the worst of it, but there were changes in her walk and anger no longer lined her words. It was disturbing to witness, to see that her past had somehow disappeared. Her entire life vanished and left her newborn, cradled in Arcade's arms.
