Date: 2012-06-19 09:37 pm (UTC)“I think I would have noticed this,” Veronica answered. The camera zoomed toward the back of the room, where several symbols were scrawled on the far wall. All of them were the same; a circle with a crude ‘X’ through it.
“Yeah… These definitely weren’t here when Terry came through,” The Courier remarked. “They have to be fairly recent. But there’s so many.”
“Maybe more than one person did it,” Veronica said. “Could be one of those crazy-ass cults.” Layla groaned.
“I really don’t want to think about a cult running around this particular area,” she grumbled.
The tape ended.

Date: 2012-06-19 09:39 pm (UTC)“A knife or a machete or something?” Veronica asked as the camera panned up and over a field near a blown-out barn. There were several dead bodies strewn about the area.
“I don’t know… The tearing’s too jagged,” the Courier answered. “I guess it could have been done with a very dull blade.”
“Great, so the psycho we’re sort of looking for took out seven raiders with a dull knife.”
“We don’t know who did this,” the Courier said firmly. “It could have been any number of people…”
“Uh huh,” the scribe said, sounding unimpressed with the other girl’s reasoning. “And tell me, how high are the cuts again? Do they look like someone tall did it?”
The girl didn’t answer for a moment as she looked down at the closest raider.
“Well?”
“Everything’s OK-A-L-A-M-A-Z-O-Oooooooh what a gaaaaaal,” Layla started singing.
“What are you doing?” Veronica cried.
“Singing, makes me feel better.”
“Well shut up. Whoever did this might still be around.”
The other girl stopped. “I think we should finish what we’re doing here and go home soon,” she said a moment later.
“Yeah… that’s probably a real good idea.”
The video ends.

Date: 2012-06-19 09:42 pm (UTC)“We’re not taking anything,” the scribe said dismissively. “If anyone shows up, we’ll just move on. Probably a good idea to warn them about all the crazy stuff going on anyway.”
“What if the person living here is… you know.”
“I wouldn’t worry about it.” Veronica asked, looking up. “If it isn’t him, we’ll warn whoever shows up. If it IS him, then he’ll get a taste of Pushy.” The woman patted her power fist fondly.
The Courier didn’t say anything for a while. Instead she panned the camera around the room, showing the interior of the second farmhouse, the one near the overturned silo. The one they’d found signs of a person living in.
“Oh… holy crap, look at this,” Veronica said, and Layla turned the camera back. The scribe was holding up a box.
“What is it?” Layla asked, moving closer. The camera focused on the box. A neat stack of holotapes was inside.
“…Are they marked?” the Courier asked. Veronica set the box down on a table and started going through the tapes.
“No… but they’re used; they’re all at the end of the tape,” the scribe said, tapping one of the cassettes.
“…What should we do?” Layla asked. “We don’t have a video player around here.”
“Let’s take them back home,” Veronica answered.
“I thought we weren’t taking anything?” Layla asked, sounding displeased.
“This is different,” Veronica said. “We’re trying to find a missing man, after all.”
“I don’t know…” the Courier said. “Maybe we ought to see if there’s anyone here again before we do.”
“We’ve been all over the place,” Veronica said impatiently. “We can bring them back after we see what they are.”
“…Fine,” Layla answered. “Let’s finish up here and go.” She turned the camera toward the other side of the room. There was a man wearing a hockey mask and hood sitting in the chair against the wall. Layla gasped, and the camera jerked.
The man was suddenly up and loping in her direction on all fours, faster than seemed possible. Layla screamed as the man reached her, and the image turned to static for a moment. The video cut back in, but the image seemed frozen on the floor. The only sound was a loud squeal of feedback. Then the video cut out.
The image came back after a few seconds. The camera appeared to be on the floor.
“Are you okay?!” Veronica cried over the sound of panting.
“I- I’m… Yeah, I’m okay,” Layla answered. “I uh… oh shit he came out of nowhere.”
The camera was picked up and turned toward Veronica, who had a splatter of blood on her power fist. She looked a little frazzled, but unharmed.
“Who was it?” the scribe asked as she moved toward the body of the hooded man sprawled on the ground.
“I don’t know… Whoever lived here,” the Courier guessed. “Maybe he was the one who killed the raiders… and that nightkin.”
“Maybe,” Veronica answered, then reached down to pull off the mask. Layla gasped loudly.
“It’s Terry!”
