Betty and Me 2b/?

One of said minions had a grasp of basic anti-sniper tactics. She saw his arm come up as he pinpointed her location. Her second bullet dropped him before he could point her out to the others.

Her third bullet seemed to snap the crowd out of their terrified stupor. The Powder Gangers made it to their feet first. You couldn’t survive in the NCRCF unless you got used to fighting amidst chaos and under sniper fire. When the last remaining Legionary disappeared under a wave of blue, she turned her attention from the steps, trying to find Inculta.

He was a blip on the hillside. She fired at him once, but it was purely on principle.

She shuffled backwards out of her nest and slung Archie onto her back. Mayor Steyn was screaming below. There was nothing she could do about that- if the crowd wanted their revenge on him, she couldn’t fight them all. She rolled the tension out of her shoulders and winced as her neck cracked. She was going to pay for the hours she spent lying in wait.

She crouched by the edge of the roof, waiting for them to calm down. For a moment, everything was still. The people of Nipton stared at each other, sharing expressions of wonder that they were free and alive. She allowed herself one smug grin.

Then one of the Powder Gangers knelt down and wrenched a hunting rifle out of a dead Legionary’s hand. His voice was hoarse as he swung it around to point at the nearest NCR soldier, but his tone of accusation was clear. Half the crowd screamed in agreement, the other half in outrage. Few were able to lay hands on weapons, but that made little difference with the ample supply of broken bottles and bricks littering the street.

Elizabeth took exit number three. By the time her feet hit the dirt, she could smell smoke.

She didn’t make a conscious decision of where to run to. She simply put her head down and left Nipton behind her, loping along until her lungs burned and her legs were jelly. When she came to a stop, she was completely unsurprised to find herself under a single tree, the lights of the Followers Outpost glowing in the distance. It was the stupidest place she could have come to- in the opposite direction from her intended next destination, and through acres of hostile territory.

But she wasn’t surprised. She would always end up here. She sat at the base of the tree, and skimmed her fingers across the hard, unbroken earth. “I went back in time,” she said to the dirt, and finally let out the hysterical laugh she had been holding in for days.

I really, really like this so far, please continue! Elizabeth is likeable (and even if she was more of the anti-hero type, I'd still like her, she seems interesting), and your writing style flows and is paced well. Better yet, you included Muggy, so I can't be unhappy at all, really. Funny though, how she tries to change history and yet it finds a way of somehow 'ruining' itself despite her efforts. I look forward to her actually meeting herself!
