Rex Getting Cyberdog'd
Date: 2011-11-22 09:14 pm (UTC)How was it? How did Rex transition from being a regular police dog to becoming one of their special cybernetic units? Think of all the things he's seen in his life.

Summary: Rex was a good dog, even before the bombs fell.
He likes the car. Smells come in through the window his Person Jack leaves a little bit open, and Rex’s nose wiggles as he breathes them in, stretched out on the back seat. His ears swivel as the radio crackles, and he lifts his head. The words are fuzzy and hard to hear right, but his tail starts to wag at what he makes out. His person talks back to it, and he switches on the flashing lights and the wailers. Rex feels his tail slap against the seat, and he barks, high and yapping and thrilled, but he knows better than to stand up while the car moves. His Person doesn’t look back, but he says things to him, good things, love-words. Good boy. Yes, he is a good boy, they will go get the bad guys. He does his job, he loves his job, he loves his Person.
There are other flashing lights as the car slows down, and he stands up and circles, and whines at his Person to hurry up. He stands and waits on the seat while he opens the door, and doesn’t jump down until his person puts the leash on because he is a good dog, but he shakes a little and his tail is still waving. He puts the rattly collar on him, and he makes himself calm down, because now he is working, and needs to listen, and be a good dog.
All of the cars are pointed at one house, the lights making it bright. He smells the hard metal sting of guns, and is quiet a little, because he knows they hurt, but even on the street he can smell ugly chemicals and the tang of fear. His person and his people are all talking, and he listens with one ear for his name, but his nose is working. There are four strangers he can smell but not see, and they are all scared and angry, and the chemicals are the ones he gets called good boy, Rex and the rope the ROPE when he finds them. He pulls at his leash and whines.
His Person Jack tells him shush and he shushes. All the people start to walk towards the house, and he was told shush, but he can’t help it, he barks a few times because he will get to run and jump and bite. He loves the biting. And after he bites he gets THE ROPE.
He growls and growls as they go inside, and his Person is shouting the warning-words, and Rex growls louder. He can hear the bad guys, and they shout back, and they are close. Rex is drooling because he wants to BITE the bad men, they are so bad, and be called a good dog. They go downstairs with the other good men, the car and flashing lights men, and there there there he is, and Rex barks gun, gun, gun, and pulls at his collar as the bad guy points it at his Person Jack.
He lets go, and Rex flies across the floor and hits him so hard he barks back, and Rex grabs his arm and bites and shakes. He shakes as many times as he can before Jack says let go, and Rex drops him and stares to make sure he stays down. He hears the other man down the hall and turns and barks and gun but his Person doesn’t see to give the order, and he whines and leaps and hopes he won’t be a bad dog. The man points the gun, and it is LOUD but that doesn’t stop him as he bites and bites and his back hurts and why does he hurt.
There are more guns and the man falls over, and Rex smells blood, some is human-blood and the other is dog. He lays down next to the bad man because his legs won’t work, and whines for his Person to come fix him, to make it stop hurting and they can get the rest of the bad guys. But his Person kneels down and pets his ears and says love-words, good boy, but Rex can smell the fear rolling off him. He licks his hand and whines. His person shouldn’t be scared. Everything will be okay, because he and Rex are together.
Protect and Serve (2/4)
Date: 2014-09-13 07:37 pm (UTC)The people in the white place pet him, but don’t do it the way Jack does, and he cries as they move him around. He wants his Person, and the rope, and to not hurt.
He sleeps for a long time.
When he wakes up, the pain is different. He aches everywhere, and he whines and kicks because his body feels wrong. He is in a kennel that isn’t his, one with a door, and there are other scared animals he can smell. The white-place people pet him and roll him and look at him, and he snaps at them because he is scared too now, and feels bad, and puts his tail between his legs. They try to say good words, but Rex knows he must have been a bad dog for all this to happen.
He sleeps again. Wake, discomfort, sleep, several times.
He smells Jack but it is old and stale, and he snuffles at a blanket under his head. He breathes in and is that oh yes it is the ROPE is there oh he was a good dog after all! His mouth tastes strange, like metal. He whines to see if his Person will come, but he doesn’t so he takes the rope and chews on it and feels a little better. He tries to hold it between his paws, but only has one. A metal thing scrapes on the floor when he tries to move his leg, and Rex whines and barks at it but it won’t go away, until one of the not-his-people people comes and makes him sleep more.
A smell. His nose wiggles itself as he wakes up. A smell, a good smell HIS PERSON JACK IS THERE. The kennel door is open, and Rex slips and slides on the hard floor to get to him. His legs are somewhere far away, but he doesn’t care, his Person hugs him and scratches his neck and says good boy good Rex. He licks and wags, and there is wet and salt on his face, and Rex is so happy he didn’t leave him there forever, all alone. He aches a little still but he feels good and jumps up when his Person stands, even though only Bad Dogs do that. He laughs and Rex pants as he scratches behind his ears, where the strangers do not scratch right.
His body feels stiff and hard, and he limps as he puts the soft collar on him and takes him to the car. He smells through the window, and smells when they are near their house, and barks and Jack doesn’t tell him to be quiet. But it smells cold, and like leaves are almost falling, when it was hot and dry when they bit the bad guys.
His Person’s puppies meet him and pet him and he rolls on his back for tummy rubs, because he loves the puppies and how they run and play with him. But they smell like fear, and step away. He puts his ears down and goes to his kennel. His body feels wrong, like when it is very very cold and his Person’s mate puts a coat on him, but thick and hard. The blankets are in the right shape, but his body isn’t, and Rex whines to himself very softly.
One by one, he listens to his family go to bed. Jack stops to scratch his ears, and Rex musters up a wag for him. He sighs, once things are quiet. He had his home-job now, guarding his people. He would listen, and patrol the house while they slept, and keep them safe, like he always did. He was a good dog.
He is scared when he wakes up for a long time, that he will be in the white place, but he is home and safe every morning. Jack walks and loves him, and trains him, and his legs work better. The puppies rub his tummy, and his person’s mate sometimes puts people food in his kibble. He goes back to work and he doesn’t care so much about his body, because the world is normal and good again.
Protect and Serve (3/4)
Date: 2014-09-13 07:37 pm (UTC)They are in the car, in the tall part of the city when great big screams start, like the ones that go with the lights on top but louder than anything. Rex folds his ears down and whines, and the radio is talking, talking, and his Person is talking back. They drive fast, and there is fear in the air. People outside are running, yelling. The car stops hard and Jack has him get out quick, and Rex doesn’t pant, doesn’t wag. Something is wrong. There is a huge, loud crowd of people, and Jack leads him into them. He watches their hands for weapons, but most just smell scared and mad. His Person tells them to be quiet, to obey, and they stand in a line and shout less. Other good guys dressed like Jack are there, herding people into buildings.
They walk up and down the line many times, but it only gets longer, and the people angrier. Rex has to growl to make some behave. The wailing is suddenly louder, and he tries not to howl at it. The people begin to scream and shove, and Rex barks, and Jack shouts, but they cannot stop the wave of people. There is light, light that is brighter than the sirens are loud, and Jack pushes down some of the people, and Rex huddles beside him. There is a moment of fear, and some try to rise, but a wind comes that smells hot and acrid, and Rex smells what is left of his fur start to singe. He whines and burrows his head into his Person’s side. More flashes, some smaller, some as bright, the winds that follow are breezes and gales.
When the awful wind ends, the people stand, scared and slow. Rex wants to lick his Person and whine and be pet, but he takes his leash and begins pointing, ordering them. He leads the way to the building the line led to, down and down, to a great circle of metal down below the earth. Jack beats his fist on it, speaks, but there is silence. Rex whines.
They go back up. The screams are fading, slowly, and the people stare at them. He sits next to his Person, listening for his name, for orders. The people move, leave. Go home, he is saying, words Rex knows but they aren’t for him. He is at work, and cannot go home and hide in his kennel. He has to be a good dog.
They go back to the car. It is dead and quiet, so Jack makes them walk. People are breaking the eyes out of buildings and taking things, and his Person has him bark and growl so they run. More people are crying, touching their faces, and moving like they cannot see. Jack has them hold each other, and they walk in a line behind him, and he takes them all to a place that smells of chemicals and medicine and sick people. He whines, because it reminds him of the white place, and he scratches his neck and says, it’s okay, good dog.
They go to Work-home, there the good guys have swarmed and the alpha there is shouting orders above the noise. There are other dogs there, some with bodies made of metal. They look at each other and want to sniff, but they do not, because they know they must be good, and sit with their people while the alpha gives orders.
They leave with two other good guys, walking along the streets. They talk to people, in warning voices say go home. Some have guns, and shout and are angry, but most give up when he growls. One he gets to bite, and when the other good guys stand him up his Person gets out THE ROPE and he gets to play tug and growl and wag and things are almost normal. The sunset is dim and slow, and by the time they should have left for home, Rex and his Person are still walking through the city. He whines and tugs on the leash. Today has been strange. He wants his kibble and his kennel and tummy rubs. His Person scratches behind his ears, says good boy, good dog, good Rex. Wait.
So Rex walks with him, until the dawn comes, slow and dark. The whole city smells of fear while they go home.
Protect and Serve (4/4)
Date: 2014-09-13 07:38 pm (UTC)He and his Person walk back to the city the next day. The next. Again. His paw is tired from walking, and Jack keeps speaking to him, the love-words, good dog when he is tired and uncertain. He starts to smell wrong, and his voice is thin. Rex sniffs at him when they rest, whining, resting his chin on his leg. He is sick, but keeps walking, finding people and giving them orders. He does not eat, but finds food and takes it to others who are scared and crying, and sometimes gives it to Rex. He bites the shouting, angry people who are throwing bottles of fire and rocks, and Jack tries to play rope but he is weak, so Rex doesn’t pull hard.
The fourth day, he smells gun, and hears the sharp clap of them. His Person steers Rex and the other good guys towards it, and there is smoke on the wind. People are whooping and wild in a park, moving like animals, and Rex growls. He smells blood, hears cries of fear and pain, and great fires have been lit of whole trees. Jack cannot shout over them, and the crowd faces them, jeering and taunting as Rex strains at the leash, snarling. One pushes forward, fast, and points a gun at his Person. Jack stumbles, falls, and there is new blood on the air.
He HURT his Person. He dropped the leash, so Rex lunges towards the bad guy, taking his arm and shaking, and he does not stop when he tastes blood because his Person does not say to stop, and he is so angry he cannot see or smell. Other bad guys are hitting and kicking him, and Rex is growling like never in his life, and he is so mad because his PERSON WAS HURT and he does something he has never done before. He lets go of the bad guy’s arm and bites him on the neck instead and shakes him until he stops moving.
The other bad guys are soaked in fear, and he snaps and growls and bites the ones that hit him, bites their legs and arms and bodies until they run. The other good guys chase them away, but Rex goes back. A good guy is still with his Person Jack, who is laying flat on the ground and smells so badly of blood. The other man tries to push him back, but Rex noses in and sniffs Jack up and down, tail tucked, ears back, whining. There is blood coming from his belly, and a foul smell. He lays down next to him, licking his face. His Person puts an arm around his neck, and scratches his ears. Good boy. Good Rex. He doesn’t wag, because he smells what his body is doing, how soft his voice is. He whines, and licks him gently, like he is a puppy.
Go home, Rex. His ears don’t prick up. He doesn’t want to go anywhere. Go home. Guard. Good dog. Rex does not want to go home. But he will guard. His Person Jack lets out a breath that smells wrong, and doesn’t take another. Rex whines and licks him, and he does nothing, so he stands up and barks at his Person, louder and louder, running back and forth. The other good guy tries to take his leash, but Rex digs his feet in because he knows he is too heavy to move. He starts to whine again, then cry. The other man lets go, and Rex lays down again, resting his head on Jack’s chest. He will guard him, like he always did while he slept.
The other man leaves. Rex stays. The sun goes down, and back up. There are animals, vermin, that come to sniff at his Person, and Rex chases them, catching one and eating it whole he is so hungry. People walk by, and he watches them carefully, but they leave him alone.
The sun is down, and up again, but the sky is so dark he can barely tell. Rain starts. It is dark and oily and stings his skin, and he sits with Jack as long as he can stand. When it starts to burn too much, he finds shelter next to a building, where he can see him. He whines. Guard, he said. Go home.
Rex takes a step away. He looks back and whines, but his Person will not follow. Good Rex. Go home.
And Rex is a good dog.
