He kept thinking once he was actually here that he'd feel a little less choked, because in New Vegas no one really seems to care. There were women in uniform opening catcalling the dancers on the sidewalk outside; there's two men in suits all but making out on top of the bar. But he still feels the noose, every time his eyes linger on a dancer and he remembers that he's in the company of people he works with, and they're only a few days away from the outpost even if it feels like a whole different world, and he still has to watch himself. Still has to deal with well-meaning companions that he's had to mislead knocking elbows in his ribs at the passing of some hooker with her tits hanging out. That's bad enough on his own, but the fact that his eyes keep wanting to linger on the men in leather and chains, undulating provocatively in their cages looking back at him with bedroom eyes and suggestive fingertip grazing the bars, is getting to be too much.

And this crew from Forlorn Hope, jesus. It's normally nice when there's another pack to share leave with but these people are lunatics. Granted, they have a lot more living to get out of their systems, given the sheer unlikelihood of their general survival, but they're getting embarrassing. And loud.

After enough awkward shuffling around and trying to dodge overenthusiastic whooping hooligans who haven't even shed into their civvies a stranger takes mercy on him, waving him over. He finds himself sharing a table in Brimstone with the only two seemingly calm men from Forlon Hope, quietly sipping beers and shaking their heads at the antics of their brothers and sisters in arms.

"Sexton's gonna wind up getting punched by a hooker again," Mayes says. "I just know it."

"I heard him ask one of the young ladies here if he could use the chains on her outfit as reins and ride her like a old west pony," Richards sighs heavily. "She thought he was just using a terrible euphemism, but he meant across the stage, riding on her back."

Mayes exhales sharply through his nose. "Or I could punch him, that could be what happens." Richards chuckles and Mayes says, "What? Hey, he's the morale officer -- tell me that wouldn't boost spirits around camp. I know I'd get a warm, fuzzy feeling watching him walk around with a broken nose."

Knight laughs with them, because it's universal, every posting has one of Those Guys, and he looks off at the young man they're discussing, all enthusiastic gestures as he wildly tries to sell some scheme to a pair of bored-looking prostitutes. Drink and decent companionship have his guard a little loose, though, and he winds up staring much longer than is safe at one of the male dancers past the private, writhing for a group of women tossing NCR bills at him. He catches himself and brings his gaze back around, fighting back the urge to clear his throat out of nervous habit. He waits for the conversation to pick back up, but then he notices Richards looking him with new eyes, and his heart sinks in panic.

Excuses are rampaging through his head but Richards just tosses a flash of a significant look at Mayes, who sighs and excuses himself to the men's room with a muttered good luck to Richards that Knight thinks he wasn't supposed to hear, and once they're alone at the table Richards is looking at him with a smile spreading wide and slow and he says, "So what are your plans for the night, beautiful?"

The sun is setting over the horizon as a morally questionable Courier lounges beside an equally morally questionably scientist. Rex is sprawled out over both of their laps--something Arcade is less than thrilled about but if he woke Rex it would anger the smaller man.

They were doing a simple review, Arcade had been imparting some basic Latin lessons to the boy and the lesson was going swimmingly until a suspicious break in their speaking.

"Alexei?" Arcade shifted very slowly, turning his wide chest over to the brown haired man, who currently took it upon himself to mentally dissect the chemical formula of the Nuka-Cola in his hand by merely staring at it.

"Alexei!" A bit more insistent, the boy jumped and Rex huffed loudly as he was ushered away by the callused and bruised hands of the aforementioned male. He took a quick swig of his drink, doubting he even tasted the acidic burn down his throat. "Yeah Arcade?" Alexei looked over with a strained face, feigning calmness as if he hadn't just completely left their conversation hanging.

"I said to try reading the inscription of the bottle in Latin." A simple request, as he was picking up on the language as quickly as he expected the boy to.

"You know what? I'm a bit tuckered out sweetheart. Can we sleep? A courier should always make full use of the daylight!" A lagging response, Arcade nodded and stood. When he took Alexei's hand in his own he slipped his fingers in the grasp to get a sample of his pulse. 70 in thirty seconds. That's 140 a minute, elated pulse.

But he decided that was a question better left for another day. Another time, when the young man wasn't clinging his arm so warmly and lovingly.

It was a week after the first incident, Arcade nearly forgetting it along with himself as he followed the young man through a slaughter of Fiends. He never liked this work, the side of him trained in labs wanted to believe he could sway them all into rehabilitation though the side of him that wandered the Wastes knew that the infection had to be cut off before it spread.

There were only a few left in a small trailer, surrounded by feral dogs that Alexei took out quickly through the green hue of a scope. There was a surge of relief in Alexei that he left Rex with The King, the dog had a bad habit of plowing into hordes of enemies without restraint.

"Arcade. A few of them are trying to ambush out right flank. Toss some dynamite." All business as he breathed evenly and fired a few more shots. The cement under his palms scratched at his hands as he retrieves the sticks from the pack and lit the match.

Three seconds, he breathed. Alexei had taught him in order to make sure it isn't passed back you have to hold them (fucking lit dynamite sticks) for three seconds to counter the delay. He tossed them quickly, it had been probably more like two seconds based on how Alexei was frowning but Arcade isn't in the business of blowing either of them up.

The Fiends see the sticks coming but have no time to counter them, one of them completely missing the targets but the other close enough to wound the three severely.

"Got it."
"Good, now the fun part. Who get's to do the beheading?" Alexei moved from the prone position onto his heels as he cradles the rifle against his chest. Something about the light shining in his black eyes reminded Arcade of the night before.

"I have an idea, if you can spell 'lieutenant' then I'll do it."

It was a bit awkward at first. The NCR people were standing in one corner – metaphorically speaking, of course, as the Cocktail Lounge of the Lucky 38 was round and thus, had no corners – the Legion guys in the other, both parties eyeing each other distrustfully over their drinks. A few Brotherhood paladins had obviously surrendered to the slightly bizarre circumstances and had settled down around a table where they made short work of the cheese crackers.

Drinks were abundant, however, and shortly after Boone and Raul had hauled the large bowl with the punch in, the atmosphere began to loosen a bit. Maybe there was a touch too much vodka in the punch, although Veronica had insisted she knew exactly how to make a perfect punch. It hadn’t been that funny at that time. It certainly was now, two hours into the punch bowl.

Christmas crackers popped and crackled everywhere while the courier ran around, making sure everyone had enough to drink and keeping everyone from each other’s throat. She passed a group of NCR soldiers, namely Moore, Hsu and Boyd, sitting in a circle on the ground with a few Brotherhood members, all of them wearing little paper hats, while a Brotherhood scribe popped a Christmas cracker.
He stared at the little piece of paper and squinted. Moore took a sip of her punch.
“What do you call a crazy golfer?”
The NCR people exchanged a few looks and shrugs.
“A crazy put!”
Moore spat a bit of punch into his face and broke out into a drunken laugh while Hsu and Boyd rolled their eyes and groaned, not having had enough punch yet.

The courier found Vulpes standing with his back to a wall, arms crossed and the bright yellow paper crown on his head looking slightly out of place, what with him still wearing his crimson legion attire.
“Isn’t it lovely that at least during Christmas time we can all forget our differences and be glad?”
Vulpes lifted his eyebrows. “Forget is maybe saying a bit too much. Ignore, maybe, and only at the orders of Caesar himself.”
“Oh come on, don’t be a party pooper, V!” The courier hooked her arm through his and he let himself be dragged along with a resigned sigh towards the punch bowl where Caesar and Cassidy were presently were busily sampling its contents.
“You know”, Cass slurred, draping an arm around Caesar’s shoulders. “You aint’ half bad a guy when you ain’t trying to crucify someone.”
Caesar emitted a hearty, if a little high pitched chuckle and tried to tickle Cassidy under her chin. She broke out into a screeching cackle and half-heartedly slapped his hands away. “I ain’t that kind of girl, mister.”
Casear leaned over and whispered something into her ear, causing Cassidy to giggle in a frequency that would have made a dog whine. It made both Vulpes and the Courier wince.

“The punch is maybe getting a bit out of hand”, the courier muttered and turned around when someone tapped her shoulder to be hit in the face by the tip of a hooting party blowout. She took a small step back and let the two legionaries pass by, hooting and laughing as they stumbled past.
“A bit?”, Vulpes asked, but before the Courier could reply, Veronica appeared and clamped her vice of a grip around both Vulpes’ and her arm.
“Come on!”, she piped. “We’re playing spin-the-bottle!”
“I don’t...”
“Come on!”
Vulpes and the courier exchanged a glance behind Veronica’s back, but there was no escaping that grip.

Little thing I whipped up for a tumblr-prompt. Wanted to write something nice and non-heartbreaking for Ms. V since I put her through a ton of crap in my other fills. Still bittersweet, though, darnit. ...Anyway.

Summary: Slow, socially awkward courier meets quick-witted, socially awkward scribe.

The courier— a young farmer’s son from out east that insisted on going by the name ‘TC,’ though he never told anyone what that stood for— was, above all else, a simple fellow. Bright enough to pass as moderately cognizant, and skilled in several areas, he was still something of a space cadet, though he at least made an effort to be polite about it. In fact, the only thing that proved to be his saving grace was the parallels people could draw between his personality and that of an adoring golden retriever.

But a people person he was not. He was fond of them, but more often than not, they made him nervous; he couldn’t read them.

He was better with the inanimate, or the non-sentient, as it were; a whiz-kid with fixing guns, making food and tanning any hide he could get his hands on— preferably from an animal that had already been killed, as he was loathe to do it himself— but his social skills were just shy of null and void. He’d often find himself wishing that people were as solidly based on the logic and reason as a bolt-action rifle, or at least had the simplicity of the local wildlife. A shotgun you could clean, modify, and fine-tune to a state of excellence, an animal you could feed, tend to, show affection for and they asked for little else… but inter-personal relations were trickier. They required a finesse he didn’t have.

There were people he traveled with, sure, people he liked— a gunslinger that thought he was weird, but inoffensive, saw him as her ticket to get out and explore; a Followers medic that thought he was an idiot savant, that he knew had taken pity on him when they’d first spoken— but he’d greatly preferred the company of the dog he’d been given in Freeside; part animal, part machine.

And that was fine. It was an arrangement he could abide by; being thought of as weird, or stupid, was common, and the dog did a splendid job keeping his mind off of his social shortcomings.

But then he met Veronica, someone he quickly took to— a first, in many ways. She was a little like him, more interested in technology and adventuring than she was in etiquette, but smarter, well-spoken, less awkward… while still being awkward enough that she could, and did, relate to him. It was a relief to have her around. She liked to tinker with things, she enjoyed taking lessons from him on how to fix up a standard firearm, she listened to him when he talked about the finer points of cooking a decent meal without poking (too much) fun at him, and she seemed to appreciate his innate ability to walk right up to local wildlife without getting into an all-out fight. When it did come down to a fight, she hit like a ton of bricks. Definitely something he could appreciate.

She was a friend, a good one— first he’d had in years. One he hoped would be more than that, eventually.

“Think she’d like some flowers, maybe?” he’d asked Cass off-handedly, on a night they’d watched Veronica depart to pick up some supplies. “Not sure where I’d get ‘em, just—” Catching sight of the caravaneer’s apparent disbelief, he paused. “What?”

“You’re barkin’ up the wrong tree, there, Ace,” she’d said, shaking her head slightly. “Seems like she appreciates those gestures but, somethin’ tells me you’re not exactly her type.”

At the time, he’d shrugged it off, figured she was just giving him shit again; wouldn’t have been the first time. But then, on a night where he presented the scribe with a carefully arranged assortment of leaves and other items to mimic some of the plastic flower arrangements he’d seen on the Strip, he learned otherwise. The caraveneer was doing the one thing he could never quite get the hang of: she was being subtle, leaving him to read into her tone.
